Creating Writing Practices for Neurodivergent Minds with Dylan McNulty-Holmes

September 20 @ 18:00 - 19:00 CEST

- €15.00

Time: Thursday 20th September 18:00 CET / 12:00 EST

How to sustain excitement and love every part of your writing process, from ideation to sharing

So many of my favourite creative people are neurodivergent. Their work is funny, exciting, stretches our perceptions and the boundaries of their chosen genres. However, neurodivergence also presents challenges within the creative process. From procrastination to taking on too many projects, to running out of steam after that initial burst of excitement has worn off, many of the obstacles our neurotypical peers face are multiplied by our brains.

This workshop will present a plethora of different strategies for dealing with common pitfalls in building sustainable writing practices. We’ll build the workshop together, from 6 building blocks:

  • Setting achievable and motivating goals
  • Getting started
  • Keeping going
  • Dopamine-ising the editing process
  • Finishing up
  • Managing multiple projects

We’ll vote on the blocks that should be our key focus. I’ll walk us through different approaches, and we’ll try hands-on exercises for each of our chosen elements. I’ll also pull in craft techniques from writers like Lynda Barry, Kirsten Bakis, Matthew Salesses, Bernadette Mayer, and more. All participants will leave with a writing pack, containing tips, tricks and adaptable approaches for all six craft components.

This workshop is suitable for writers of all experience levels, and across disciplines. The instructor writes across poetry and fiction, and is dyspraxic (which has very similar executive dysfunction traits to ADHD). If you have any specific accessibility requirements you’d like to discuss before class, feel free to reach out: [email protected].

Together, let’s build writing practices we love, and fill each others’ future bookshelves with neurodivergent excellence!
